Stretching, wear, and misalignment in chains or belts either from loose or stuck Timing Belt Tensioners or contaminated oil in the Engine Timing Covers, cause slight changes to pin position and reduced engine performance. Significant positioning changes lead to more serious problems, including hard starts and misfires.
