Timing Belt Tensioners maintain tension in the belt and ensure smooth engine operation with the Camshaft and Crankshaft perfectly in sync. Stuck tensioners, wear in internal springs and bearings, along with oil leaks in hydraulic tensioners can cause loud noises when accelerating, abrupt changes in engine RPMs, and if the belt breaks, the risk of major engine failure. Bear in mind that Serpentine Belts also have a separate tensioner assembly and can make the same noises as the timing belt parts. Both this and the Drive Belt Tensioner Pulley are easy to inspect, and if needed, quick and inexpensive to replace.
