BENDIX BUGGIES TO BENDIX BRAKES

In 1907, Illinois-born Vincent Bendix, together with his colleague O.M. Delauney, established the Bendix Company where they started the development and production of Bendix-branded buggies. After winning a patent on a mechanically operated starter drive, the 1914 Chevrolet “Baby Grand” was the first car to have the Bendix starter (which became a standard device on all cars). When Bendix met Henri Perrot who had patented a four-wheel replaceable shoe braking system, Bendix struck a deal to manufacture the system in the U.S. After Bendix died of a heart attack in 1945, his legacy lived on. During the 1960s, the Bendix Corporation was recognized as the producer of more brakes for more kinds of vehicles than any other producer in the world. The Bendix Corporation became part of AlliedSignal, which in turn became Honeywell Corporation in 1999, and in 2015, Honeywell granted MAT Holdings, Inc. an exclusive license for the use of the Bendix trademark on automotive braking products to be sold in the United States.

BENDIX WAS FIRST TO MARKET

Marked by product development and innovation, Bendix parts have a history of many first-to-market breakthroughs. They include the duo-serve brake, a brake type that has been the standard in the industry for more than 35 years; the first caliper-disc brakes used on American-built automobiles; the split hydraulic system, which is standard equipment on all passenger cars; and the hydrovac power brakes, which have been used on more trucks than any other type of power brake.
